Most Shopify SEO advice obsesses over title tags and meta descriptions. Important, sure. But there's a bigger blind spot: your product images, and the empty alt text behind most of them. A Shopify alt text generator fixes that at catalog scale; this guide shows you when you need one, how to pick one, and when writing by hand is still the better call.
A typical Shopify store has 5 to 15 images per product. On a 200-product catalog, that's 1,000 to 3,000 images, and Shopify leaves every alt field empty until someone fills it.
That matters for three reasons. Google Images can't understand a photo it has no description for. Alt text is a WCAG 2.2 requirement, and missing alt text is the kind of defect accessibility complaints are built on. And it's one of the easiest SEO wins to ship at scale once you stop thinking of it as a per-image manual task.
Below: how to add alt text in Shopify by hand, the three generation methods (manual, AI-assisted, bulk AI), what good output looks like, and the workflow merchants use to get full coverage in an afternoon instead of bleeding it across three months.
Why Alt Text Actually Matters (More Than Most Guides Tell You)
Alt text has three jobs. Two are about search; one is about not getting sued.
1. Image Search rankings
Google's image SEO documentation calls alt text the most important attribute for giving an image metadata, and says Google uses it together with computer vision and the page content to understand what the image shows. Filename helps a little; surrounding text helps a little; alt text is the part you control directly.
The volume is bigger than most merchants realise. Google says Lens alone handles nearly 20 billion visual searches a month, on top of classic Google Images. For visual categories (fashion, jewellery, home goods, beauty) a product photo that Google can read is a product that can be found.
Your competitors with proper alt text are eating that traffic. Yours isn't. Our guide to alt text and image search rankings goes deeper on how Google Images picks what to show.
2. Web Search context (honestly: a small, indirect benefit)
Alt text is contextual, not a ranking lever for the page. Google's John Mueller has said that alt text matters for image search, not for web rankings. What it does do is help Google understand an image-heavy page whose on-page text is thin, and give you a natural place for product terms without stuffing the body copy. Treat it as hygiene, not strategy.
3. Accessibility (the non-SEO reason, and the lawsuit one)
The WCAG 2.2 non-text-content criterion requires that "all non-text content that is presented to the user has a text alternative." For an online store, that mostly means product image alt text. Screen readers depend on it. Blind and low-vision shoppers can't use your store without it.
Missing alt text is one of the most common defects cited in web accessibility complaints because it's trivial to detect with an automated scan. Even if SEO weren't a factor, closing that gap is cheap insurance. More on the legal side in the accessibility section.
How to Add Alt Text in Shopify (Manually)
Before any generator, it helps to know where the field lives. Shopify's alt text documentation gives the product-image steps; collection, theme and blog images each have their own place.
- In the Shopify admin, go to Products and open the product.
- Click the product image to open the media preview.
- Click Add alt text.
- Type the description and click Save alt text.
- Close the preview and repeat for the next image.
| Image type | Where the alt text field is | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Product images | Products > product > click image > Add alt text | Up to 512 characters; Shopify recommends 125 or fewer |
| Collection image | Products > Collections > collection > image > Edit alt text | One image per collection |
| Theme images (banners, sections) | Online Store > Themes > Customize > section > image settings | Field name varies by theme; some themes reuse the file's alt |
| Blog post images | Online Store > Blog posts > post > image > Edit alt text (featured) or the editor's image dialog (in-body) | In-body images are easy to miss |
| Files (Content > Files) | Content > Files > file > Edit alt text | Sets the default alt for that file wherever it's used |
That's six clicks per image. Fine for a dozen; miserable for a thousand, which is why the rest of this guide exists. The step-by-step with screenshots is in how to add alt text in Shopify.
Manual vs. Alt Text Generator: The 3 Methods (And Who Each Is Right For)
Alt text can be produced three ways. Each has a specific right answer for catalog size, budget, and how much control you need.
| Method | Best for | Cost | Speed (100 images) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual (you write each one) | Under 50 product images, luxury or regulated | Your time | About 80 minutes |
| AI-assisted with review | 50 to 2,000 images, most Shopify stores | Free plan or $9.99/month | About 10 minutes |
| Bulk AI, spot-review only | 2,000+ images, dropshipping, lifestyle catalogs | $29.99/month with Autopilot | About 3 minutes |
How to choose
Honest rule of thumb: if you can hand-write alt text for your full catalog in one workday without losing your mind, manual is fine. Past that, the time-versus-cost maths flips clearly toward AI. Say a 500-product store has 5 images per product, so 2,500 images: at 45 seconds each, manual writing is about 31 hours.
AI-assisted is around 4 hours including review. A copywriter at $1 per image would be $2,500. The choice usually makes itself. For the longer version of this trade-off, see AI vs manual alt text.
What Good Alt Text Actually Looks Like
The rules haven't changed much since 2020. What's changed is that AI generators now produce output that matches the rules without supervision, which has raised the bar for what counts as "good."
The 5 rules
- Describe the image specifically. "Brown leather wallet" is fine. "Brown bifold leather wallet with stitched edges, open showing card slots" is better. Google's own example ladder goes from "puppy" to "Dalmatian puppy playing fetch".
- Keep it to one line. Shopify recommends 125 characters or fewer; WebAIM says a few words are usually enough and a short sentence is rarely needed. Our alt text character limit guide covers what each screen reader actually does with long text.
- One natural keyword, max. If the image is a product hero, including the product type once is fine. Google's image docs warn that stuffing alt attributes with keywords can get a site treated as spam.
- Don't start with "image of" or "picture of." Screen readers already announce "image" before reading alt text, so you'd get "image: image of brown leather wallet."
- Skip SKU codes and vendor names unless they mean something to the searcher. "Brown leather wallet" beats "WALLT-BRN-LTR-002 by Manufacturer."
Real examples (good and bad)
| Image | Bad alt text | Good alt text |
|---|---|---|
| Product hero (brown leather wallet) | image, image of wallet, best brown leather wallet for men premium quality genuine leather | Brown bifold leather wallet shown open with six card slots |
| Lifestyle shot (same wallet on a desk) | lifestyle photo, or wallet (same as the hero: a wasted image) | Brown leather wallet on wooden desk next to silver watch |
| Detail close-up (stitching) | close up | Close-up of cream-colored stitching on brown leather wallet edge |
| Size chart image | size chart | Size chart for men's leather belts, waist 30 to 44 inches (plus the chart as HTML text) |
The pattern: each alt text describes the SPECIFIC image, not the product generically. This is what AI generators get right when they have real product data to ground in, and what they get wrong when they don't. More worked examples by category are in best alt text examples, and you can test any line in the alt text checker.
Manual: When It's Still the Right Method
AI is the right call for most stores. But manual still wins in three specific contexts. If you're in any of these, don't optimise prematurely.
1. Luxury, craft and artisan brands
If your brand voice depends on precise, evocative product language, alt text included, AI's competent-but-generic output dilutes it. A jewellery store selling $800 rings benefits more from "Single round-cut diamond solitaire in 14k yellow gold band" written by someone who knows the piece than from an AI's "Gold diamond ring on white background." Custom AI instructions narrow the gap, but they don't close it for a 40-product house collection.
2. Regulated and technical categories
Supplements, medical devices, financial products, automotive parts: categories where image descriptions have to be accurate to the label. AI hallucination risk is real here. A bottle labelled "Adult Multivitamin 50+ with Vitamin D and Calcium" should not get "Multivitamin bottle on white background" that loses the specifics, and it must never gain attributes the bottle doesn't show.
3. Small catalogs (under 50 products, under 250 images)
The setup cost of any tool, even a 30-second install, isn't worth it for 250 alt texts you can hand-write in 3 to 4 hours. Use Shopify's built-in alt text field, write each one yourself, ship. We say this even though we sell an AI tool. Honest maths is honest maths.
Shopify Alt Text Generators: How the AI Tools Compare
The Shopify App Store has a handful of tools with AI alt text generation. The architectures vary more than the marketing pages suggest. Quick disclosure: we make MetaGenius AI.
Pattern 1: Generic vision-model wrapper
The tool sends each image to a vision model with a one-line prompt like "describe this image for SEO." Output is what you'd get from a chatbot directly. These tools work, but they ignore your product's actual data (colour, type, vendor, variant), so they describe what the model sees in pixels rather than what the product is.
Risk: hallucination on edge cases (a forest-green hat described as "dark blue baseball cap"). Acceptable for stock-photo blogs, marginal for e-commerce.
Pattern 2: Vision + product-data grounding
The tool sends both the image and your product's structured data (title, type, vendor, tags, variants) to the vision model. The AI then describes what's in the frame using terms that match your product taxonomy. MetaGenius AI sits here, as do a few competitors when configured correctly.
Why this matters: the AI writes "Forest green wool baseball cap" instead of "Dark green hat" because it knows your variant name is "forest green" and the product type is "wool baseball cap." Output quality is visibly better on the first batch you review.
Pattern 3: Vision + product data + brand voice rules
The most capable pattern. On top of Pattern 2: tone presets, custom instructions ("always include material if visible"), and length enforcement. This is where alt text generation crosses from "automation" into "production-ready without supervision."
If you're evaluating tools, ask whether they support custom AI instructions and whether they show you the result before saving. If not, you're getting Pattern 1 or 2: fine for many stores, limiting for brands with specific voice or category needs.
| Question to ask a vendor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does it read the product title, type and variant names, or only the pixels? | Grounding is the difference between "dark green hat" and the colour name you sell |
| Can I add brand instructions and a tone? | Keeps output consistent across thousands of images |
| Is there a preview and edit step before saving? | You catch hallucinations before they're live |
| What does it cost per image? | MetaGenius AI: 1 credit per image, 50 free credits a month |
| Does it handle new products automatically? | Coverage decays as you add products; Autopilot keeps it at 100 percent of the catalog |
| Does it write in my store's languages? | Translated stores need alt text per language; MetaGenius covers 15 |
Pattern 3 alt text generation. Free to try.
MetaGenius AI writes alt text grounded in your product data, with custom brand instructions, 15 languages, and a preview before save. The Free plan gives you 50 credits a month (1 credit per image) to test on your own products; Starter ($9.99/month) adds bulk generation across the catalog.
Install Free on Shopify →Bulk Workflow for 1000+ Images
Most "how to add alt text" guides assume you're doing it one image at a time. Useless for any real catalog. Here's the workflow that scales; the app-specific version is in bulk alt text for Shopify.
Step 1: Audit your current state (10 minutes)
Pull a list of every image in your store and its current alt text. Two ways:
- Free option: crawl the store with Screaming Frog (free under 500 URLs) and export image alt attributes to CSV
- In-app option: MetaGenius AI's SEO Health audit lists every image with missing alt text; any SEO app worth using does the same
Sort by "current alt = empty." Those are your priorities.
Step 2: Prioritise by traffic (5 minutes)
Don't fix everything first. Pull your top 50 products by impressions in Google Search Console (Performance > Pages). The images on those pages are where image-search demand already exists. Start there.
Step 3: Generate in batches (30 to 90 minutes for the average store)
Bulk-generate alt text for the priority set in batches of 100 to 200. Don't generate 2,000 at once; that's too many to spot-check. Review each batch before publishing:
- Skim for hallucinations (anything that mentions an attribute you don't recognise)
- Spot-check edge cases (single-variant products, products with no description)
- Reject anything that mentions a brand or vendor the AI invented
Step 4: Auto-generate for new products
The win that compounds: turn on auto-generation for new products, so every product you add from now on gets alt text on creation. MetaGenius AI does this through SEO Autopilot on the Pro plan; some competitors offer it as a paid add-on.
Step 5: Re-audit quarterly
About 30 days after a bulk update, check Google Search Console > Performance > Search type: Image. Compare impressions on the products you updated against the month before. Then re-run the audit each quarter, because new images, theme changes and app uploads quietly reintroduce empty alt fields.
Most stores benefit from running the alt text and meta tag projects in the same week: same audit, same review pass. Our bulk edit meta tags guide covers the parallel workflow for titles and descriptions.
Accessibility: The Non-SEO Reason This Matters
If nothing above has convinced you, this should: alt text is the most cost-effective accessibility investment you can make on a Shopify store.
The legal landscape in 2026
In the US, courts have applied ADA Title III to online stores for years, and WCAG is the standard plaintiffs and settlements point to. The Department of Justice's April 2024 web accessibility rule made WCAG 2.1 AA the explicit standard for state and local government sites, which is the clearest signal yet of where private-sector expectations are heading. In the EU, the European Accessibility Act has applied to e-commerce since June 2025.
Missing alt text is the easiest violation to prove because an automated scan finds it in seconds. The cost of fixing an entire catalog with a tool is a few dollars of credits (1 credit per image on MetaGenius AI). A single demand letter costs more than that in legal time before anyone replies. The risk maths is one-sided.
The non-legal accessibility case
Millions of shoppers use screen readers or magnification, and they buy online like everyone else. Alt text is how they "see" your products. Stores with complete alt text simply have a larger addressable market.
The two-purpose rule
The good news: SEO alt text and accessibility alt text are the same thing. Specific to the image, one line, naturally readable. Optimise for one and you've optimised for both.
There's no trade-off to manage. A tool that generates alt text for Google Images produces alt text that's also accessible; no separate workflow needed. The next step is a ten-minute audit of your top 50 products: if most of their images come back empty, you've found your afternoon project.
