Shopify URL Structure for Best SEO

Every Shopify URL is your domain plus /[fixed prefix]/[handle]. The prefixes (/products/, /collections/, /pages/, /blogs/name/) cannot be changed on any plan; the handle after them is yours. Keep handles short, hyphenated and keyword-first, and never change a live one without the redirect Shopify offers you.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify fixes the path prefixes. /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/[blog-handle]/ cannot be removed or renamed, even on Shopify Plus.
  • The handle after the prefix is where your SEO lives. Google says descriptive words in the path help it understand the page, so /products/leather-bifold-wallet beats /products/sku-3243.
  • Never change a live URL without a redirect. Shopify offers a "create a URL redirect" option when you edit a handle. Leave it on, or add the redirect under Content, Menus, URL redirects.
  • Your store URL is under Settings, Domains. Every store gets a name.myshopify.com address; connect a custom domain and set it as primary so customers and Google see that one.
  • 4Fixed path prefixes Shopify will not let you rename
  • 70Chars in the page title before results may cut it (Shopify)
  • 100,000URL redirects allowed per store (20M on Plus)
  • 1Time you can rename your myshopify.com address

Shopify gives you less control over URLs than WordPress, and more than most merchants use. The platform fixes the path prefix for each content type. The part after it, the handle, is yours, and it is the part Google reads when it decides what a page is about.

Most stores let Shopify generate the handle from the product title, never touch it, and then wonder why /products/mens-genuine-full-grain-leather-bifold-wallet-slim-design-brown does not rank for "men's leather wallet". This guide covers the Shopify URL structure: what you can change, what you cannot, where to find your store's own URL, and how to change a live URL without losing the rankings it has.

How Shopify URLs Work

Every Shopify URL follows the same pattern: domain.com / [path prefix] / [handle]. The prefix depends on the content type and is fixed by the platform:

Content type Path prefix (fixed) Handle (yours) Example
Products/products/Product handlestore.com/products/mens-leather-wallet
Collections/collections/Collection handlestore.com/collections/mens-wallets
Product inside a collection/collections/[collection]/products/Both handlesstore.com/collections/mens-wallets/products/mens-leather-wallet
Pages/pages/Page handlestore.com/pages/about-us
Blog posts/blogs/[blog-handle]/Blog handle + post handlestore.com/blogs/journal/leather-care-tips
Homepage/Nonestore.com/

The key constraint: you cannot remove or rename these prefixes. Shopify's URL redirect documentation lists /products, /collections and /collections/all as fixed paths that cannot even be redirected. A subfolder prefix is normal; Google's ecommerce URL structure guide uses /product/black-t-shirt-with-a-white-collar as its recommended example. The SEO opportunity is entirely in the handle that follows.

Shopify generates handles automatically from the title when you first save a product or collection. A product called "Men's Genuine Full-Grain Leather Bifold Wallet, Slim Design, Brown" becomes a 61-character handle with no clear target keyword. The /collections/[collection]/products/[handle] variant in the table is the duplicate Shopify creates when a product is opened from a collection; it carries a canonical tag back to /products/[handle], which the Shopify canonical tags guide explains in full.

Your Shopify Store URL: myshopify.com vs Your Domain

A lot of "Shopify URLs" searches are simpler than slug strategy: people want to know what their store's address is. Every store gets a name.myshopify.com URL at sign-up. Shopify's domains guide says you can find your current store URL under Settings → Domains, and that the myshopify.com name can be changed only once.

For SEO, the myshopify.com address should never be the one Google indexes. Connect your own domain, set it as the primary domain, and Shopify redirects the myshopify.com address to it. If Google still shows the myshopify.com version, that is one of the causes covered in why a Shopify store is not showing on Google.

Selling in several countries? Shopify Markets puts each market on a subfolder (store.com/fr/), a subdomain or a separate domain, and its international SEO guide recommends subfolders for most stores because they share the main domain's authority and get hreflang tags automatically.

Shopify URL Slug Best Practices

Once you know what Shopify controls and what you control, the rules for the handle are short.

Use hyphens, never underscores

Google's URL structure guidance recommends hyphens rather than underscores to separate words. leather-wallet reads as two words; leather_wallet does not. Shopify generates hyphens by default, so this mostly matters for products imported from suppliers or apps.

Keep handles short and keyword-first

The target: two to five words, the main search term first, no stop words. A product called "Handcrafted Italian Full-Grain Tan Leather Card Holder With RFID Protection" should have the handle leather-card-holder or rfid-leather-card-holder, not the full title. Google's ecommerce guide says the words in the path "may help Google better understand the page"; a title-length handle buries the one phrase that does.

All lowercase, no special characters

Shopify lowercases handles automatically and strips characters it cannot use. The edge case is imported data: supplier feeds that put model numbers or uppercase codes into titles produce handles like wallet-bf-2201-brn. Clean those before the product goes live, when there is nothing to redirect yet.

Match the handle to the search term

Your handle should reflect what people type into Google, not your internal product naming. If Search Console shows the page gets impressions for "slim leather wallet men", that phrase is closer to the right handle than the marketing name on the box. The same discipline applies to the page title; see Shopify meta title best practices.

URL Optimization by Shopify Page Type

Product pages (/products/)

Products are where most stores have the most URLs and the least discipline. Edit the handle on the product page under Search engine listing → URL handle. Shopify's product guide adds a warning worth taking seriously: "don't edit it too often or the product might not display in search engine results."

Target the term someone would use to find that exact product. A $45 men's bifold wallet: mens-bifold-wallet. A $180 Italian leather card holder: italian-leather-card-holder.

Variant differences (colour, size) belong in the title and meta tags, not the handle. The rest of the page is covered in Shopify product page SEO.

Collection pages (/collections/)

Collection handles carry the most weight because collections rank for category terms with commercial intent: "men's wallets", "leather accessories", "gifts for him". Treat them as your highest-priority URLs. Short, precise, no stop words: mens-wallets, leather-card-holders, rfid-wallets. The collection page SEO guide covers the description and internal links that go with them.

Pages (/pages/)

About, FAQ, Contact and Shipping pages rarely rank for product keywords, but they should still be clean. /pages/about-us beats /pages/our-story-and-company-background. For pages that target an informational query, use the query: /pages/how-leather-is-tanned.

Blog posts (/blogs/[blog-handle]/)

Shopify blog URLs have two handles: the blog's and the post's. The default blog is news, so every post starts /blogs/news/. You can create a blog with a better handle (guides, leather-care) under Online Store → Blog posts → Manage blogs, and assign new posts to it.

Post handles can run a little longer than product handles because informational queries are multi-word, but match the main keyword, not the full H1. If the H1 is "How to Care for Full-Grain Leather", the handle is how-to-care-for-leather. Shopify adds no dates to post URLs, which is what you want for evergreen content.

Changing Existing URLs Safely

This is where stores lose months of ranking in an afternoon. Change a URL without redirecting the old one and every backlink, social share and crawl signal that page earned now points at a 404.

The redirect rule: non-negotiable

When you edit a handle in the Search engine listing section, Shopify asks whether to create a redirect from the old URL to the new one (the mobile admin labels it "Create a URL redirect from the previous handle", per Shopify's collection settings guide). Keep it on. To add or check redirects by hand, go to Content → Menus → View URL redirects; redirects can also be imported as a CSV.

Google's redirect documentation says a permanent redirect tells its indexing systems that the new URL should be the canonical one, and that it keeps track of both the old and new URL. Use a permanent redirect only when you are sure you will not revert; the step-by-step is in the Shopify 301 redirect guide.

When to change vs when to leave it

Not every ugly handle is worth fixing. Check the page in Google Search Console first. If it already earns impressions or clicks, a handle change starts a re-indexing cycle, and Shopify itself warns against editing handles often.

The bar for a change should be: the handle is actively wrong for the query (a supplier code, a typo, a product that was renamed), not "I'd prefer a cleaner URL". A page ranking on an ugly handle is still ranking.

Batch URL changes

Cleaning up 300 imported products? Do it a collection at a time over a few weeks, with the redirect option on for every one. Export the redirect list afterwards from the URL redirects page so you have a record. Smaller batches keep Search Console readable: if clicks move, you know which batch moved them.

Common Shopify URL Mistakes

Keyword stuffing the handle

A handle like leather-wallet-mens-leather-wallet-best-leather-wallet is not optimised, it is noise. Google's spam policies define keyword stuffing as filling a page with keywords in an attempt to manipulate rankings, and a handle is part of the page. One clear phrase, used once.

Using dates or seasons in product handles

Some merchants write summer-2026-linen-dress. The URL is stale the moment the season ends, and renaming it later means a redirect you did not need. Keep product handles timeless; put the season in the collection or the campaign, not the product URL.

Leaving the blog on /blogs/news/

Every post inherits the blog handle. "news" says nothing about your topic; /blogs/leather-care/ says it on every post. Rename the blog before you publish many posts, because changing it later changes every post URL at once.

Changing URLs right after a traffic drop

After a core update dents traffic, the temptation is to change everything, URLs included. That adds a re-indexing cycle on top of whatever caused the drop. Diagnose first with Search Console and the Shopify SEO not working checklist; URL structure is rarely the reason.

Beyond the URL: The On-Page Layer That Drives Rankings

URL structure is one signal among many, and not the strongest. Once your handles are clean, the work shifts to the fields Google weighs more: the page title, the meta description that wins the click, image alt text for Google Images, heading structure and the content itself. The complete Shopify SEO guide lays out the whole stack.

The page title carries more keyword weight than the handle. The meta description does not rank the page but decides whether people click it. Alt text decides whether your product images show up in Google Images, a separate stream of commercial traffic most stores never tap.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best URL structure for Shopify SEO?
The best Shopify URL structure is domain.com/products/keyword-handle: keep the automatic prefix and write a short, hyphenated, lowercase handle that matches the search term for that page. Aim for two to five words. Google's URL guidance asks for readable words rather than IDs and hyphens between words; the /products/ prefix is a normal subfolder and costs you nothing.
Can I change the /products/ prefix in Shopify?
No. Shopify's prefixes (/products/, /collections/, /pages/, /blogs/) are built into the platform and cannot be changed on any plan, including Shopify Plus; Shopify's redirect tool will not even redirect away from them. You control only the handle after the prefix. This is not an SEO disadvantage: Google reads subfolder structures like this on every large retailer.
How do I find my Shopify store URL?
In your admin go to Settings, then Domains. The list shows your name.myshopify.com address, which every store gets at sign-up, and any custom domain you connected, with one marked as primary. The primary domain is what customers see and what Google indexes; the myshopify.com address redirects to it. You can rename the myshopify.com part only once.
Should I include keywords in my Shopify product URLs?
Yes. Google's ecommerce URL guidance says the words in a URL path may help it understand the page, and it recommends /product/black-t-shirt-with-a-white-collar over a numeric ID. Use the main search term once, keep it to two to five words, and separate words with hyphens. Do not repeat the keyword or stuff synonyms into the handle.
What happens if I change a Shopify product URL?
When you edit the handle in the Search engine listing section, Shopify asks whether to create a redirect from the old URL to the new one. Keep that on and the old links, bookmarks and Google results all land on the new page while Google re-indexes it. Shopify's own guidance is not to edit handles too often, because each change restarts that process.
Does URL length affect Shopify SEO?
Google gives no length limit for URLs and does not list length as a ranking factor. Length matters for people: a handle that repeats the whole product title is hard to read, hard to share and usually hides the one keyword you want up front. Keep the handle to the words a shopper would type, which lands most product handles under 60 characters.
What is the Shopify blog URL structure?
Blog posts live at /blogs/[blog-handle]/[post-handle]. The default blog handle is news, and you can create a blog with a better handle such as guides or leather-care under Online Store, Blog posts, Manage blogs. Shopify does not put dates in post URLs, which is the right setup for evergreen articles. Keep the post handle to the article's main keyword.
How do I bulk edit Shopify product URL handles?
Shopify has no bulk handle editor in the admin. The product CSV has a Handle column, but Shopify uses the handle to match rows to existing products, so changing it on import creates new products rather than renaming the old ones. For a large clean-up, change handles one at a time with the redirect option on, or have a developer use the Admin API and import the redirects as a CSV afterwards.

Good URLs get you indexed. Good meta tags get you the click.
